This is a good library in the city centre. It has a good book selection, a good section on local interests and local history and a large section of computers for public usage. there are two entrances and directly left from the Princes Square entrance is a good coffee shop.
Newcastle's new city library is a few years old now but does a lot more than just lend books. It is a real mine of information. You need to learn how to use some of the tools but the staff are very helpful
I used to visit this library in the old building and what a great improvement this building is, named after the Newcastle musician Charles Avison. Go on the lift up to the local history section and see the exhibits.
