The path follows the steps up to the church. Most of the way up there is a left fork which, if you're feeling fit you can take to the higher Santa Lucia. Up at San Matteo you get marvellous views over the town & beyond. The church is beautifully clean on the outside but all boarded up. A real shame.
the path and stirs are difficult to find and to climb but the view is beautiful. Unfortunately the church is closed and abandoned, run down and dirty, broken glasses and no description or history. what a shame ! and the municipality, where are they? a tresaure not well kept.
so if someone come to SCICLI he mustt o visit this place, full of history and local culture, isn't no easy to find, but you can ask the way at the local people!
We would have liked to visit this church and we tried really hard but all the paths we could find vaguely in its direction were blocked off (afternoon of Ferragosto, maybe the wrong day to try). for us ,an elderly couple, it was quite an effort to climb up to visit San Matteo but certainly worth it. The view from the top is absolutly splendid and the panorama impressive. A wonderful spot.
