If you like strolling, running dogs on a wide open beach, surfing, swimming, hiking, golfing, watching awesome surf, taking pictures, looking at the stupendous hills meeting the equally stupendous ocean, cycling through back roads, few places in Ireland combine it like Achill Island does it so well and with almost no crowds.
Ok, a long drive through stunning countryside and keep going :) the road winds up the hill side, views are stunning then you see the beach in the bay, stunning is not good enough for the bay, even though the day was overcast and dull its was so sheltered that you would not notice.
Visited for two days in August and saw the Wild Atlantic Way at its best - beautiful blue skies one day and crashing storms the next. A lovely beach for walks with views of the Minaun Cliffs. If you do find your way onto Achill island, treat yourself and go the full length and make the interesting driver's descent onto Keem beach. Choose driver accordingly.
