The sculpture park Las Pozas, located in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, was...

The sculpture park Las Pozas, located in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, was created by Edward James, an eccentric English poet and artist, also a great patron of the Surrealist movement. Nestled in the Huasteca Potosina, Edward James found the perfect setting to create the work of his life. Between natural and artificial pools and waterfalls that prepare the mind to enter into a dreamy world, a surrealistic labyrinth unfolds. Buildings that evoke nonsense, doors that open up to nothing, stairs that lead to the sky, and concrete flowers that grow at the same time as the natural ones. The design of Las Pozas is inspired both in orchids and the greenery of the Huasteca Potosina, it combines ideas and concepts taken from the Surrealist movement in which Edward James was immersed. A Shangri-la, a fusion between organic and artificial things, between the jungle and concrete, thus managing to merge two worlds in just one. The origin of Las Pozas goes back to 1947, when Edward James (who lived in some kind of exile in the United States), purchased a coffee plantation near Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, and registered it in the name of Plutarco Gastelum, his close friend, together they created Las Pozas. During the first years, Edward James kept the Las Pozas as a display of his fabulous orchid collection, and as home for his many exotic pets. In 1962, after an unprecedented frost that destroyed a huge part of Edward James' plantation, he concentrated on constructing the sculptural garden we know today. The sculptural set of Xilitla is located inside a piece of land situated in a place called La Conchita, township of Xilitla, San Luis Potosí. It takes up an area of almost nine hectares. Between 1964 and 1967, the renowned painter, Leonora Carrington, visited the park, leaving an al fresco painted mural in El Castillo, Plutarco Gastelum's house, also Edward James' home during his visits. The image of the painting corresponds to a figure with human feminine traits and a zoomorph head. In 2007, the Fundación Pedro y Elena Hernández, A.C, acquired Las Pozas with the purpose of preserving the sculptures and protecting the flora of its surroundings. The Fundación Pedro y Elena Hernández, A. C., besides being in charge of receiving more than 80 thousand visitors each year, also works on: - The preservation and restoration of the structure - The preservation and restoration of the garden - The preservation and restoration of the areas of woods that belong to the property

Quite an amazing effort must have been involved. Not the easiest of places to build in the thick jungle. The downside is that is a very busy place. No chance of solitude with tour groups and people everywhere. Still if you try and ignore all the other travellers you can get some sort of vibes and possibly a glimpse of... 更多

Las Pozas was a place many friends told us about. All were excited. To cut the suspense: it must have been such an amazing place for Edward James and his friends. It still emits this vibe of bohemia, surrealism and fantasy. It´s a different place to visit. But - as always - adjust your expectations and make sure you arrive... 更多

If you are wondering whether it's worth waking up at 2 - 3 am to leave San Luis Potosi just to get to the town of Xilitla around 8 - 9 am, putting up with lousy roads and interminable bumps, i can honestly say, GO FOR IT!!! Even with rather bad weather (it ran and the slippery soil wasn't exactly... 更多

Sir Edward James Garden has lost its charm it once had. I went there the first time 8 years ago and it was totally tranquil, mystical and mezmerizing. There was hardly anybody there. I got so lost in this labyrinthal garden. I went back not long ago and this place has turned into Disneyland. Big tour buses wait for tourists... 更多

A place made like a labyrinth, weird structures, in the middle of the woods, with several pools where you can swim. It is a nice place to visit.

It was fabulous and lush. The leaves of the plants were stunning, my houseplants will be jealous. Now I know what they are supposed to become. The garden was incredible, like 'the secret garden' but better. The waterfall was like out of a movie, I've never seen such beauty. Although it was late November we went into the water. It... 更多

We literally wore garbage bags. Bought them at the local store and made them into ponchos. It was pouring. We couldn't swim. Would have been dangerous. I am still happy we went, though. This place is kinda like a fantasy... it goes on forever! We were there two hours in the rain with four kids, ages 13, 11, 5, and... 更多

I heard about this magical spot from a friend who insisted we make it here one day. We were NOT disappointed!! It is a magical place and if you Love Nature, this is exactly where you want to be. Get there early in the morning, we did and we literally were the only ones there until we were leaving. The... 更多

We did not go to Las Pozas for the pozas (pools) but for the incredible art and structures built by Edward James. There is much walking up/down stairs and paths to the different points of interest and views, so be prepared. The on-site cafe served a lovely quinoa salad for lunch. Take your time and spend an extra day, there... 更多

Nothing I can say can truly describe this magical place. The surreal structures combine with the nature creating an otherworldly atmosphere. My favourite place was the river and waterfalls that run on one side of the garden, you can swim there and lay down and enjoy the sunlight surrounded by walls and columns that were built to create wonder.
