The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the internment of over 22,000 Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre opened its doors in 1994 as an initiative from the New Denver Kyowakai Society to commemorate and honor the stories of over 22,000 Japanese Canadians who were stripped of their civil rights, labelled "enemy aliens" and uprooted from their coastal homes during the Second World War. Located on the site of a former internment camp, the original buildings, period artifacts, interpretive displays, and Heiwa Teien garden designed by the renowned Roy (Tomomichi) Sumi, chronicle this extraordinary episode in Canadian history.

This is a museum dedicated to the Japanese internments of the Second World War, how they got here and how they lived in this and other communities.

This internment memorial includes actual buildings that were occupied by Japanese-Canadian families between 1942-45. They contain bedrooms, kitchens, and other rooms filled with genuine artifacts from the internment. The surrounding well designed & meticulously maintained Japanese gardens are beautiful and provide an ideal setting for quiet contemplation. The staff are friendly and very helpful and they interpret and talk about... 更多

Have been to New Denver 13 + times. Always meaning to visit the Nikkei centre. Glad I did. Certainly we cannot rewrite history. However it is amazing that born in Canada Japanese were interned in WW II. This is a must see for everyone.

Interesting part of Canadian history - shameful. Very well done, and a beautiful Japanese garden. A lovely place to explore after dinner.

The Nikkei Centre in New Denver is a tribute to the Japanese who were forced during WWII to leave there homes in coastal British Columbia because they were supposedly threats to national security. The Nikkei Centre contains buildings and furnishings as they were in the 1940s. A sobering memorial to a terrible time in Canadian history.

After reading Joy Kogawa's beautiful book about this time period, I was intent on visiting this memorial. It is an unforgettable experience for any one and worth the trip. My father was intimate with this area, fishing every year in the Kootenay Valley and many BC Lakes. I also recommend the museum at Kaslo, also an internment site.

This small remnant of the internment camps where Japanese Canadians were herded during the second world war is an eye opener. There are the houses, letters and pictures etc, that tell the shameful tale. Very worth a visit.

This was a really good place to learn about such an important part of our country's past. The displays are very informative and interactive. The woman at the front desk was also very knowledgeable. You should definitely stop for a visit if you are in New Denver.
