We've been here a couple of times now, it's quite spectacular to see. It takes less than an hour to walk around and listen to the audio guide. There's a lot of steps to get to the upper gantry - and watch your step, I'm nursing a badly sprained ankle from slipping awkwardly on a step in the crypt.
The church was carved inside the rock in the 13th century. Aubeterre's name comes from the color of the rock, white (aube=alba=white), so a sort of chalk, this explains how they were able to carve this enormous construction in just 10 years...It is simply breathtaking once you enter! All the noise and heat and worldly problems fade away in front... 更多
We visited as part of a large family group, 8 adults and 7 children from 1-9. I have 3 year old twins. I would recommend this beautiful church. Even if 1 adult watches kids inside whilst other one wonders round and listens to the history. My 2 dud enjoy it but were scared by the stairs going upwards, it does... 更多
This is must see if your staying or visiting Aubeterre we had a very good time at this site and found the guide to be very interesting and informative. Well worth a visit
I don't know how people could score this an average (3 stars), but guess they're entitled to their opinion. At €5 per adult entry is reasonable and includes an audio guide. Interesting history dating back to the 11th century. Quite amazing to think this was all carved out of rock. The burial area was a little spooky. It was a... 更多
We had some trouble finding the church but it was worth our persistence. Hidden within an idyllic picturesque village, the church is quite astounding. From the outside the scale and height of the church is deceptive and I hadn't even noticed the crypt until leaving. The headsets give short useful commentary and are needed to fully comprehend what lies before... 更多
We got married in the Monolithic Church in May 2015, it was an exceptionally atmospheric and special venue, with our guests commenting what a special venue it was for our wedding ceremony. It looked even more beautiful decorated simply with candles and some flowers. We visited before the wedding to look round, and went back for our 1 year wedding... 更多
Visited this on an evening visit to Aubeterre. It is worth a visit as it is spectacular inside but it is a short excursion. We were in and out within 30 minutes. We had children with us who enjoyed looking at the scale of the church and climbing the steps to the top. Aubeterre is lovely for a drink in... 更多
