This church was carved into the rock of a cliff, in the middle of the village and under the then Lord's castle, in the 12th C. when the local Lord came back from the Crusades. Impressive!
This doesn't look much from the outside but is fascinating inside - though you do need to get the audio devices to make the most of it (in 4 languages I think, but definitely got them in English). A unique place and very atmospheric. You have to admire the skills and labour of the original workers. Little else to recommend in the area but this is definitely worth a detour to see.
Didn't quite know what to expect but found this church, hollowed out of the cliff face, to be one of the most impressive sights I have seen anywhere. One can only marvel at the skills of the mediaeval crafsmen who produced it. If you are anywhere in the area, go and see it!
What amazes me is that this enormous building was started from the top on bare ground so they had to visualise what it was going to be like 17 m down and 'build' the columns, originally 14 of them, by removing the material round them. There is an ancient crypt only discovered when a lorry backing in collapsed the foundations.... 更多
