I have been to many of the Newport mansions but this was my first visit to Chepstow. I tend to avoid hourly tours as I don't love being in a group but rather like going it alone. This tour however, was quite nice. Our guide was lovely and shared lots of great history on the families that lived in and... 更多
We loved this mansion. The grounds were so beautiful and the house was no livable. Very easy to access this location, right off of Bellevue avenue and one of the trolley stops.
It's difficult to rate this house. On one hand, it's truly hideous. On the other hand, it's stunningly hideous and demonstrates that money does not equate to good taste. The late Mrs. McBean, who had last owned and lived in this house, had an obsession with doing cross-stitch. Image a room crammed full of crossed stitched chairs and sofas. Or... 更多
I have been to every mansion many times and I am always in awe. That said, Chepstow is the one Mansion that I would really love to live in if it were possible. The others are grand and ornate but this gem is truly a home that is warm and inviting.
My husband and I just returned from our trip to Newport - we loved the mansion tours! However .... Skip this one - it was nothing in comparison to any other mansion - I didn't think it was relevant to the gilded era which is what the mansion tours are about - it's out of place - almost like going... 更多
You can say what you want, but Chepstow has so much character! You can now take photos on the inside of these gorgeous mansions and it is really something to see.
This mansion shares a lot with the Doris Duke mansion at Rough Point. Both were occupied until their respective owner passed away, and both contain many objects from the 1960's and beyond. There is even a vintage television and remote in one of the rooms at Chepstow, something you certainly won't see at the other mansions. The contents of the... 更多
I can't understand why a previous reviewer said that it was an "art tour". The portraits, the photos, the intricate nicknacks make a tour of a historic house come alive. I know...I'm a tour guide in a plantation house in Charleson. The guide makes the difference. Well done.
We have been to several homes in Newport, but never Chepstow. We went on a guided tour at 10:30am on a Tuesday. It was a small group and a lovely tour. We find the history of these homes so interesting. It was a very enjoyable visit.
Chepstow is a real Victorian gem! It is filled with Victorian collections. The garden room alone is worth a visit. All the furniture and wall hangings are original to the house and just as they were when the preservation society took ownership. It feels like a real home where you could spend time today. Excellent guide also made it a worth... 更多
