I've been camping at Ashurst Lake twice. Each time was a great experience. The campground was not overrun with campers and was clean. It is not too far from Flagstaff but far enough to be "away" from the city.
Takes about 14 miles of non paved washboard road driving to get there, but definitely worth it. We chose the forked pine campground for our stay. It's several miles down a well-graded but washboard-bumpy road. The campground toilets are vault, the water supply is a big tank. The fishing can be good or awful depending on when the lake is stocked. The water is murky, and it can get pretty windy (good for some, unpleasant for others). It can attract a crowd on weekends.
