The main walking path isn't very long, but there are longer hiking trails you can go on. Can't go to the top of Sunset Crater anymore, though. Enjoyed the incredible lava flows, frozen in time.
A staff member at a tourist bureau in Sedona recommended that we take in this loop on our way to the Grand Canyon. While it did add a fair bit of mileage, it was definitely worth it. My husband and I were amazed at the black chunks of lava flow that looked like a giant's torn-up field ready for planting.... 更多
This is a great addition to your itinerary if you are in the area to visit Grand Canyon or Sedona. Spring and fall are the best time to visit. The scenic drive through this monument also goes to Wupatki National Monument so be sure to stop there as well. From Flagstaff, take US89 north to the Sunset Crater-Wupatki Loop Rd.... 更多
Traveling between South Rim of canyon and Flagstaff, we enjoyed the drive thru this magnificent area of Arizona. The cold, black, barren lava flow presented a realistic look at the force of nature. Good for a quick stop and picture. We didn't climb to the crater as many more places beckoned
Only 1000 years old!!! Wow. So much to look at here. A steep climb for one scenic view of the nearby San Francisco Peaks. A short walk through a lava flow. Great park to visit.
We thought we'd take the little sidetrip to Sunset Crater Volcano NM and Wupatki. It's nice to see a bit of lava and some topographical variety, so it's a pleasant enough diversion, but I wouldn't say it's a 'must do', or something to go out of your way for, unless perhaps you've never seen lava before. I may have been... 更多
I don't think too many people think about Arizona and volcanoes. It's interesting and informative but not terribly dramatic considering some of the other parks and/or monuments in the area. The lava fields are close to the road and quite interesting.
Worth the stop but it is a typical volcano crater. Each crater is somewhat unique but in many ways they are the same. You can walk to get a better look of the area and that is always a fun activity for my wife and I.
My friends and I stayed in Flagstaff when visiting the Grand Canyon. We had a whole day before driving back to Las Vegas and were looking up something to do to kill time. My friend stumbled upon information for Sunset Crater and Walnut Canyon National Monument. There was less to see here than Walnut Canyon but it was a cool... 更多
This is on the same road as Wupatki ruins so you get a twofer. The volcano eruption was less than 1,000 years ago so this is a very recent event. The place reminds me of Craters of the Moon National Park in Idaho. The cone is right by the road with a nice walk of about a mile that's very... 更多
Great view of old lava beds and pumice. While you are not permitted to climb to the rim and see down into the crater, it is still a beautiful view and easy hike.
Beautiful strange landscape seems out of earth. nice trails for hiker and for people that like more organized path. worth every moment
A fascinating look at the power of nature. Lava Flow Trail doesn't take long and isn't strenuous, but you learn a lot. Buy the guide book for a buck at the ranger station.
Worth the stop, very nice trail. Again as all the other points of interest in the area very eductional, never to old to learn something new. Warning there were alot of bees in the area.
I woke up that morning to snow on the ground and a chilly morning. The land is covered in know cool lava its nice covered in snow but would have been awesome even without the snow. Its got a couple of nice hikes down into the lava sites and your surrounded by lava the mountains in the background make it... 更多
