Marshall is best known as the "Great Chief Justice" for his role in creating the modern Supreme Court. He served from 1801 until 1835 and his influential decisions such as Marbury v. Madison helped shape the principle of judicial review. Marshall was a true Founding Father, serving in local, state and national government as well as the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the United States Government. He was also well known locally as a leading member of Richmond society and a gracious and jovial host.

The property remained in the Marshall family until 1911 when it was sold to the City of Richmond, but the house was saved from demolition by local preservationists. The John Marshall House has been a museum since 1913 and contains the largest collection of furnishings and memorabilia associated with the Marshall's family and career. Visitors to the site can enjoy a guided tour of the house including the remarkable collection of original furnishings, take a stroll through the colorful garden, visit the museum shop, or even try their hand at the game of quoits (John Marshall's favorite game).

The Marshall House is walking distance from the Virginia State Capitol, the Library of Virginia, and the Valentine Richmond History Center.

Of all the historical places I visited in Richmond, this was quite possibly my favorite, in large part because I'm a fan of John Marshall, really a towering figure in early American history even if not that well known. The house is terrific, the tour guide interesting, and the gift shop good.

We took the family here for a tour. The price was very reasonable (about $7,AAA discount). The house is beautiful, and with many original pieces inside. It is restored beautifully. Our docent was just wonderful, with many great stories as we went through downstairs and upstairs rooms. At one point on the tour they had us sit in Marshall's parlor... 更多

I have always wanted to come but never found the time. The tour is about 45 min and tour guide (Judy I believe) was great. The talked about him, house specifics ( what was original, the architecture, etc) and the immediate area since it is in the middle of downtown, a lot of stuff was built around here. Keep in... 更多

This a great little tour if you have an hour to kill. Our tour guide, Fred, was very knowledgable. I would have never known how much John Marshall did if I had not gone here. The house is very cool and the history was even cooler.

John Marshall was a very famous man and leader in the Colonial and Federal periods. Made Chief Justice by John Adams, he kept many Politicians in over reaching their rights. The tour is very good and full of information about the man and the period he influenced.

John Marshall was one of the most important founding fathers, not only the essential Chief Justice who established the authority of the Supreme Court but also a key player in the founding of the Republic. He was also an interesting character. The docents in this house do an excellent job of telling his story, and the house itself is a... 更多

Unfortunately, our review does not include the interior of the home of Justice Marshall, due to the fact that my wife became ill, and we had to leave. However, I can tell you from what I saw and heard of the outside, the grounds, and the tour guide, This is a professional operation, reasonably priced, and something every visitor ti... 更多

Home to the longest-serving Supreme Court Justice in US history, the John Marshall House is a hidden gem in the middle of downtown Richmond. Our tour guide, Sylvia, was a walking encyclopedia regarding all things John Marshall, and she really knew how to bring him to life during the hour-long tour. She was fantastic and so was the house. So... 更多

This tour was delightful and fun, led by a great woman whose knowledge on the subject is extremely passionate and she has the capacity to reach her audience! I Highly recommend as it gives a great insight to the struggle and often entertaining development of the United States.

the guide was really knowledgable, she fielded questions from the tour group, who were obvious history buffs without missing a beat. also, she was adorable, must have been close to 80 y/o, dressed very fashionably
