We were very impressed with the quality and smoothness of the main highways on the Big Island. The speed limit is low at times but the locals do not heed it. They drive very fast on all roads so be aware. That should not stop you from enjoying the view. We pulled over frequently in regular stopping areas to allow... 更多
Mamalahoa - just saying it is fun. It can get crowded and there was construction when we were there. Either grin and take the aloha spirit or turn around - or better yet stop in one of the many stores or eateries along the way. Fun in every sense of the word.
Mamalahoa will take you around the south end of the island, to Volcanoes National Park. It's twisty and slow in parts, has some lovely scenery, and takes you by a plethora of local attractions, like coffee plantations, unique Kona stores, gardens, and farms.
This road may get you to Kona Or Waimea a little quicker but it may not get you there at all. Very dangerous road at night. Speeders and inebriated drivers have caused many accidents. May take a little longer, to take 19, better safe than...
The "Main Drag" between Kona and Waimea, this is one of the more scenic roads on the island. Most of the way, you will see the ocean on one side and slopes of a volcano on the other side. Between the road and water, keep on the lookout for brown bearded goats climbing the rocks and wandering in the flat... 更多

Man, the long scenic highways here are epic. There is so much to see. So many reasons to pull over and pull out the camera or just stare in wonder. A truly wondrous place the big island. This is one of those highways.
The elevation is such that vegetation grows lushly. Nice mix of coffee farms and native vegetation. Not a long drive, but well worth seeking out.
