Went here for a free Christmas gospel music concert. It was excellent. The streetcar will drop you off two blocks from the church. It is located just north of the French Quarter in the Treme neighborhood.
The cathedral is superb, no doubt, but St Augustine tells the story of the city that you are visiting through the eyes of the people who live there. The 10 am Sunday mass is a thrilling experience no matter what your religion may or may not be.
The volume, tone and choice of songs are just right in this bright church just one block beyond Rampart St. near the French Quarter. The celebrant also delivered a good sermon, and it is not necessary to be Roman Catholic to enjoy and appreciate this service. Having a penchant for visiting churches, decided to visit the oldest black catholic church in New Orleans. However, it was closed due to renovations.
This was a quick little stop during our walk through Treme and was definitely a highlight. The outside of the church does not do the inside justice but I appreciate that this church has stayed true to its roots. It is not extravagant in any way but truly authentic.
