The Grandest Fort on the Upper Missouri River

Between 1828 and 1867, Fort Union was the most important fur trade post on the Upper Missouri River. Here, the Assiniboine and six other Northern Plains Indian Tribes exchanged buffalo robes and smaller furs for goods from around the world, including cloth, guns, blankets, and beads. A bastion of peaceful coexistence, the post annually traded over 25,000 buffalo robes and $100,000 in merchandise.

We were in Dickinson and decided to go here before the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt. It was off the beaten path. Unfortunately there were no rangers able to give guided tours but normally there are. Go to Fort Buford while here since its 2 miles away.

If you enjoy history do not miss this site. Not a large site and completely re-built since the US Army took it apart to build Fort Buford, but the information provided is great. This was 'the trading post' for the upper Missouri and all the tribes in the area. Museum has books, video, exhibits and well versed employees. Amazing historical... 更多

Impressive reconstruction of the facility. Informative displays, nice video presentations, helpful staff. Originally on the banks of the Missouri River but with the River changing course over the years now is quite a distance from the rivers edge. As many as seven tribes traded tanned buffalo hides, beaver pelts and other furs for hard goods.

Took our students it was great. The staff are very good and good with the kids. Learned many things, but didn't get to go into the house.

While Fort Union is a bit off the beaten path, it is still worth the extra time to stop by if you are traveling between North Dakota and Montana (it sits right on the border). I have been to better National Historic Sites (Forts) in other states, this one is still worthwhile. The visit does not take long and it... 更多

I love looking for unusual places to go while on road trips. Loved this one because of the history buff in me. Once the largest fur trading post in the United States. The outside of the fort is surrounded by teepees, kind of giving the feel of what it would have been like to ride your horse up to. In... 更多

Was rather confused upon entering, as there's really no signs as to what to do/where to go. A gentleman in period costume came up and asked if he could give us a tour. He was very good, lots of interesting history here. After the tour, we went into the house where there is a nice small museum (and bathrooms!). Think... 更多

This was one of the main post for fur trading. I enjoyed it knowing some of the people I've read about like John Colter frequented. This was the fort he went to after being left for dead after being mauled by grizzly.

Wonderful! We very much enjoyed our 2 hour stay here, first walking around the grounds and reading the signs, then into the house itself for a look around. We were met by Sawyer, a fur trading clerk in full historic garb. The fur business was slow that day, he reported. We wandered through the small museum, very nicely done too,... 更多
