The Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum captures the Civil Rights...

The Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum captures the Civil Rights Movement in Savannah. See a Timeline of Civil Rights History that begins in 1865. Read the story of the Father of modern Civil Rights movement in Savannah, Reverend Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert who reorganized the local chapter of the NAACP in the 1940s segregated South. His successor Westley Wallace Law led the Civil Rights Movement, in Savannah, through the turbulent 1960s with nonviolent protests that resulted in the downtown businesses in the city of Savannah being desegregated by 1963. Visitors to the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum also experience a "church theatre" which symbolizes the church organization and NAACP working in tandem to make the Savannah Civil Right movement a success. In the theatre guests watch a video that is a window into that history from the men and women who were on the front lines of Savannah's Civil Rights Movement.

It is such a privilege to see the exhibits throughout the museum. Miss Roselyn greeted us and took us for an introductory tour. She was so understanding and patient as I burst into tears at the sight of one of the signs that met us in the first room. She listened as I related my own stories. Having been raised... 更多

Warning!!! The leaflet which you can find at the visitor centre indicates this museum opens at 10am - in fact it opens at 11am. However, when we turned up shortly after 10am, the kind lady who was indoors opened the building for us (we had to wait outside for her to turn on all the lights and tv screens for... 更多

My love of Savannah has been heightened thanks to Ms. Ross & this wonderful museum. You will learn more about the Civil Rights Movement from the vantage point of the African Americans in Savannah who used non-violent protests and economic boycotts to gain equality for themselves. This is the history you can't find in the history books at school. This... 更多

My visit to this museum was well worth the trip to historical Savannah. I was told some facts that don't get printed in some history books. You have to "dig" for the kind of information that you will receive here. Our guide was very knowledgeable and eager to share what she knew about the African American history of Savannah, Ga.... 更多

Very informative- I am so glad we took time for this hidden gem of history! The staff shared personal stories and took time to share a lot of the history of Savannah's role In the Civil Rights struggle and the local history. As we toured the rest of our trip, we saw the city with new eyes because of what... 更多

A superb museum that takes you through the Civil Rights struggle of African Americans in Savannah. Whilst it explains the era and nationwide struggle then it is Savannah's history with its leaders and institutions that is explained. The graphics, displays, videos and historic building setting are modern, thorough and excellent at taking you through the struggle. Don't miss it.

Travelled to Savannah with 3 friends in August and whilst in Georgia decided to visit this museum one afternoon. We are so glad we did as it gave us such a great insight into the civil rights movement in America, with real stories, videos and pictures showing what life was like during that time. The staff were wonderful! Thoroughly recommend... 更多

Went on Saturday on a visit to savannah. An outstanding educational experience. Don't miss the short documentary on the desegregation of savannah. Staff is willing to share their first hand knowledge with guests. Important history all should be aware of to understand how we git to where we are today.

We visited the Civil Rights museum in Savannah during our tour of the South and were blown away by it. It’s a really excellent look at the era of segregation in Savannah from 1900 – 1970. Displays are informative and well-done, covering different aspects of segregation from education to voting via social aspects such as lunch and cinema arrangements. The... 更多
