In remote, jungle covered hills on the Pacific coast, The Ara Project, a conservation NGO dedicated to the survival of Costa Rica's two macaw species is working to breed and release young birds into areas where they once flew free. Guests can book tours of the Punta Islita breeding and release centre where they have the opportunity to view released Scarlet macaws in the wild and up close and meet some of the Great Green macaws kept for breeding. Tours run for an hour and aim to inform guests of the project's work, the plight of these birds in the wild and what we can all do to help them.

The Ara Project is doing such great work - releasing Scarlet and Great Green Macaws in Costa Rica. They first give you a presentation about the plight of the Macaws. Afterwards you get to see some of these beautiful parrots come to feed. It's amazing to witness!

We learned a lot about the birds and observed them close at hand at the evening feeding. The rest of our vacation we were delighted to see them throughout the day in a tree near the dining area of our hotel and on the golf course. The macaws in flight are an unforgettable sight. The veterinarian's talk at the project... 更多

The Ara project is a cause well worth supporting. We found the tour leader very knowledgable and passionate about increasing the numbers of Scarlet Macaws in Costa Rica. You get a short educational video followed by a walk down into the grounds where trays of food are hoisted up into the trees for the wild birds. The Macaws gather prior... 更多

We learned a ton about the plight of Scarlett and Great Green Macaw's in Costa Rica, Central America and northern South America. Teaser alert - It's not good! Obviously the "snack" of sunflower seeds was the highlight of the entire experience. We ended up having 12 wild Scarlett Macaw's visit which even our guide was surprised by. I highly recommend... 更多

This non profit works to rescue, breed and release Scarlet and Green Macaws. The short tour was led by a smart young intern from Germany who was passionate and knowledgeable. These birds are amazing and it is sad to learn how threatened and endangered they are. We learned a lot and were inspired by our visit. This is a must... 更多

Lovely project. Breeding, rearing and releasing macaws to bolster the local population but also educating the local populous not to try and keep these birds Highly recommended and worth while

Seeing these beautiful birds up close was amazing! I was shocked to learn how fast the population has declined over the last 10 years. So glad this project exists to insure this species lives on for the next generation to see.

Wonderful program and very knowledgeable staff. Very well run and meaningful work to save the Macaws. The birds in the wild have fallen to numbers in the thousands. Very tragic. This program is working to release birds back to the wild.

Even if I hadn't seen a single animal I would think this a great visit. Expect to learn loads and it feels good spending money on a good cause. The two girls presenting to us were both very interesting people and knew everything there is to know about the birds. When we arrived the area was surrounded by howler monkies,... 更多
