The National D-Day Memorial is located in Bedford, Virginia - the community suffering the highest per capita D-Day losses in the nation. The Memorial honors the Allied forces that participated in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 during World War II. With its stylized English Garden, haunting invasion tableau, and striking Victory Plaza, the Memorial stands as a powerful permanent tribute to the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of D-Day participants. The Memorial is encompassed by the names of the 4,413 Allied soldiers who died in the invasion, the most complete list of its kind anywhere in the world.

Visitors can expect both an educational experience as well as an emotional one, as they walk the grounds at the Memorial and leave with a clear understanding of the scale and sacrifices made during the largest amphibious landing the world has ever seen. On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which "we will accept nothing less than full victory." More than 5,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft supported the invasion, and by day's end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in France. The D-Day cost was high with more than 9,000 Allied soldiers killed or wounded as the march across Europe to defeat Hitler began.

My wife and I visited a few days ago and the staff at the ticket office and at the memorial were very nice and helpful...esp Jim! Now the memorial was an honorable place to visit and it was well thought out as far as how it was put together and presented. There were some major maintenance issues though. The access... 更多

Very well detailed account of planning, execution and attack of D Day. Located in Bedford, Va just minutes away from Lynchburg. This city lost the most souls per capita during this event. There are very informative tour guides available that will take you through all phases and will provide great background information.

Going from Civil War immersion into WWII felt a little jarring, but monument very touching with the thought and planning that went into it. Meant a lot to be able to have D-Day made a bit more real for us. Glad to be able to show respect for these men who made such a sacrifice.

Today, we visited the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. I heard good things about this place in advance. Lucky for us they had a commemoration ceremony with Korean War veteran guest speaker. This was very moving to say the least. The outdoor exhibits and monuments are some of the best I have seen. I would advise taking the tour... 更多

This was our second visit to the memorial. This time we joined a tour led by a docent -- strongly recommended. Depending on your level of interest, one could spend at least a couple of hours at the Memorial (the tour takes about one hour and runs on the hour). If you go, be sure to see the 10 minute... 更多

Have had the honor of placing memorial bricks in memory of family members who served in the armed forces. You must go there to experience the feelings of gratitude and respect that come over you as you take in all that is represented there. A sacred place. Excellent learning experience for families.

This is probably the best memorial of this type I have seen. It makes you realize the sacrifice and results of D Day. Take the guided tour when you go - the guides add so much to the visit, making you much more aware of what each element means, how they fit together, the story behind it, and the aftermath.

This memorial is a wonderful tribute to those who served in the military during the D-Day invasion. Our guide was Gerald a D-Day son and he gave a tour that we was very informative and one that we'll remember for a long time. Every veteran was greeted and thanked for their service. Plan to spend a few hours at the... 更多

What a place! First enter the Info centre who are very helpful and give you maps and times of the free guided tours by former vets. - As its organized in a giant circle you can park anywhere around a particular area that commemorates the US and Allied forces during WWII - there's a very poignant wall in bronze with... 更多
