Visited as family with teenagers. Lots of small wildlife animals, and great variety of plants/trees/flowers/etc. The entire trail is pretty long, so suggest you take advantage of the stop/rest areas to just enjoy the view, and read the descriptive signs. This is like a hidden gem. When you get there and start walking you forget that you are actually in Midland (some parts you can see the interstate). It's very nice and relaxing.
This is well worth the time to visit. In the summer months, come early before the sun really heats things up. Once you start down the trail and stop at the lookouts and read the descriptions of the wildlife and plants and trees, you will forget that you are in Midland.
The Jena Welch Nature Preserve has the potential for being an asset to the community. As it is run now, it is about average, although for Midland, it may be a little above average. We enjoy walking trail...we went backwards to change things up! Saw different animals this time & daughter tallimarked bobcat scat on trail; Fabulous!! Wear your walking shoes...2 mile hike is too far to carry a 50 lb 6 year old...Whew! We will go back each time we visit West Tx...Fun time for all ages!!
