I'm what people call a "Tombstone Tourist" as I study cemeteries across the state and write about them. This cemetery has been on my "to visit" list for a while, and now I'm just sorry I didn't make the effort to see it sooner! Beautifully maintained, wonderful monuments, historic markers and "residents" and some great stories behind the stones. A... 更多
Don't miss the Oakwood when you visit Jefferson. Say Hi to Diamond Bess, This is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Look for the book by Mitchell Whittington as a guide
Beautiful old cemetery. Wish there was a visitors guide for the interesting locals buried here, like Diamond Bessie Moore. We are still looking for the two men that were chained together in death and their graves are marked by a chain linking the graves together.
It's like traveling back in time. Seeing the little graves of babies and the graves for the soldiers is just so touching. Being there really moved me. I love history so it was an emotional thing for me. You must go if you are in the area! Take the whole family. My 13 year old son and 15 year old... 更多
We visited Oakwood Cemetery one afternoon. Such a beautiful, peaceful place. Toward the back of the cemetery is where the older graves are. Sadly, one area is the resting place of nearly an entire family including several choldren. We found Diamond Bessie's grave. It is very clean and seems to be visited often. It's a "must visit" if you are... 更多
Lots of history dating back to the Civil War with many Confederate some Union soldiers and also soldiers for the Reconstruction after the war. It also has the locally famous "Diamond Bessie" grave site. This is a must visit for history buffs with some time to explore.
My husband loves cemeteries as he is a history buff. Diamond Bessie is buried here, but also a lot of Civil War Veterans, as well as citizens who built the town of Jefferson. A very well kept cemetery.
