Visited the tower and battery whilst on holiday in Hoy. Wasn't sure what to expect, but the gentleman who runs the site for Historic Scotland met us and took a small group of us on a guided tour. It was fascinating - he was very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. The ladders to the tower are quite steep but... 更多
What we thought would be a quick trip to the tower and a quick look round ended up being a very interesting morning. David from Historic Scotland took us a tour round and gave us all the history behind the tower and area it was situated. His knowledge was second to none and it was this that made the tour... 更多
There is a charge for this attraction of £4.50 for an adult which I would find a little steep given what there is to see here. Okay so I did visit out of season so we couldn't pay or get inside the tower but there were information boards about the history in the car park which was great. Well worth... 更多
Pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed visit. Historic Scotland guide really knowledgeable and clearly enthusiastic about his charge. Fascinating bit of design in the tower. Prepare for quite a climb up steep ladders but worth it .
Closed on a Wednesday - handwritten note, apparently for lack of staff, locals said, which was very disappointing as it is quite a distance to go
Fascinating and unusual features, worth a visit if you have a trip to Hoy. Helpful and friendly staff, got himself soaked taking us over to the tower. We didn't get to enjoy what would have been a great view because it was raining.
This tower provides an insight into yet another period of Orkney history. We had the most wonderful and comprehensive guide by the warden, who was happy to answer the many questions our 10-year old had. There are signs up, but it is much better having the (free) personal tour! An under visited site.
After doing the Hoy walk we went straight to the the Martello Towers and had a good time walking round the old site and seeing the mess rooms then the guide took us out to the Towers, there was only the two of us on the tour, then inside where you go down to the lower floor then up again... 更多
This historical site at the southern end of the island of Hoy is well worth the 30 minute drive from the ferry port at Lyness. Expecting just a ruin, the site is actually well maintained with onsite guide who enthusiastically shared his knowledge with us. Much of the interior of the tower and associated building are recreations of how the... 更多
Had a brilliant guide and we were able to access it from top to bottom. Brilliant construction and the gun was never fired in anger. Towers like these are found in the West Indies Corsica and Indian Ocean.
