Definitely worth the drive. Tower is visible from the ferry landing and the adjacent buildings and gun emplacements which date from the early 19th century are well preserved. You will need to be able to climb a steep ladder with hand rails to get up into the tower. Graffiti from 1818 is easy to read!
...But turned out to be fascinating. Interesting tour of the barracks then a very interesting tour of the tower - the powder store, the accommodation, the water filtration system then a trip up to the gun turret to see how the gunners avoided contaminating the water supply :)
I had never heard of this Tower and the fort next door until very recently, but now I think it should be in the top 10 attractions in the UK. It is a Martello Tower and very nearby artillery fort which have survived pretty much intact since they were built in the 19th century, and in which you can see... 更多
Thanks to David , the warden , this was a superb visit. I learned a lot of interesting information from him. Really engaging. Visit the tower if you can climb up - its great.
Visited the tower and battery whilst on holiday in Hoy. Wasn't sure what to expect, but the gentleman who runs the site for Historic Scotland met us and took a small group of us on a guided tour. It was fascinating - he was very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. The ladders to the tower are quite steep but... 更多
What we thought would be a quick trip to the tower and a quick look round ended up being a very interesting morning. David from Historic Scotland took us a tour round and gave us all the history behind the tower and area it was situated. His knowledge was second to none and it was this that made the tour... 更多
There is a charge for this attraction of £4.50 for an adult which I would find a little steep given what there is to see here. Okay so I did visit out of season so we couldn't pay or get inside the tower but there were information boards about the history in the car park which was great. Well worth... 更多
Pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed visit. Historic Scotland guide really knowledgeable and clearly enthusiastic about his charge. Fascinating bit of design in the tower. Prepare for quite a climb up steep ladders but worth it .
Closed on a Wednesday - handwritten note, apparently for lack of staff, locals said, which was very disappointing as it is quite a distance to go
Fascinating and unusual features, worth a visit if you have a trip to Hoy. Helpful and friendly staff, got himself soaked taking us over to the tower. We didn't get to enjoy what would have been a great view because it was raining.
