Wild and in parts quite desolate, but that's why you go really! We went by ferry from Stromness for the day. This is the less populated area of the island so take what you need, although there is a fabulous cafe called Beneth'ill to visit. Obviously many people go to walk the path to view the Old Man of Hoy,... 更多
Who would guess such a small island could have so much history. Scenery and walking fantastic - a visit to The Old Man is a must!
Ferry from the mainland very reasonably priced and efficient. Toilets were spotless... Hilly compared to rest of Orkney...a brisk walk up to the top of the hill was well worth the effort. We never made the walk to the Old Man of Hoy so will return to cover that walk along with a visit to see Sir Peter Maxwell Davies... 更多
We visited Hoy to see the few attractions that we had learnt about, it's a very pleasant island with beautiful scenery. It was great to just drive around and take it all in to be honest. It's well worth a day here if you're into the attractions that can be found on the island.
We took the ferry over from Houghton Bay and had a full day on Hoy Island... there is lots to do, and the scenery is dramatic.
Lovely wee island, went across on the boat from Orkney early morning, took our car and drove around the island stopping at a bothy by the beach for a short stroll.. Had pre booked into a local hotel for lunch which advised to do unless you take a packed lunch.. then headed back for the boat back to Orkney.
Hoy is the highest of the islands and is one of the most beautiful there are not a lot of people living on Hoy so that means there is a lot of undisturbed land to look at and enjoy.
Ensure you book the ferry out and return from Houton, it does not carry that many vehicles. Limited ferry schedule only provided about 5 hours on the island if you are a day tripper so if you wish to visit the Old Man of Hoy, time may be critical if planning to visit other attractions. Island is bigger than what... 更多
One of the most beautiful places I have ever been. From the quite picturesque beaches where you can watch seals play to the rolling hills of heather where was was lucky enough to watch an osprey hunt! Rich in history and archaeology there is something for everyone of any age. Good clean facilities dotted around, the locals are friendly and... 更多
Early ferry over and late ferry back allows you to see most of the stunning island in a day. Highlights were Hackness, the view of Scapa Flow from the old Navy HQ, and the beautiful but brooding Rackwick beach. A good drive up and down the island, we didn't have time to get to the Old Man. Not sure how... 更多
