What a great hidden gem of a state historic site. Just outside of Union SC this wonderfully restore plantation home tells the story of SC secession governor Gist. The surrounding national forest covers what was once a large upstate cotton plantation. If you visit be sure to ask the helpful ranger about the sites revolutionary past.
We came here and picnicked and the kids climbed some trees and then we took the trail (the shorter one). It really wasn't much to speak of, but a woodland walk is always better than just sitting around doing nothing. The ranger was exceptionally nice. This House is so pretty. The river is a short walk behind the house and there is a very short trail loop that goes around back of the house. Great place to just take a quite walk or the dogs for a walk.
The building is great. Glad that it has been preserved. The only other thing that is represented as original is the kitchen building. It apparently is from the timeframe that the Gist's lived there but is the second kitchen. So it is great, too.
While driving through South Carolina, we decided to take a detour off the highway to visit this plantation. Deep in Sumter National Forest, we were surprised to find such a lovely plantation home.
