The Warren Lasch Conservation Center is located on the former Charleston Naval Base. Not is the best area of town. What they have done here to restore and tell the story of the Hunley and its crew is amazing. Tours of the Hunley are on Sat/Sun only. However, if you are in the area, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND visiting to see... 更多
Fascinating tour showing the ongoing work to completely salvage the CSS Hunley. Amazing progress has been made, but there are thousands of hours of work and research to be done. The art and science of undersea archeaology is clearly still developing.
The center houses a museum of sorts with lots of interactive displays, a Pioneer Sub replica, mock-ups of the Hunley that you can climb into, movies, artifacts and best of all, The H.L. Hunley itself! They have a great gift shop too. Come for a couple of hours and enjoy the trek through history.
Got a Groupon, so it was a good value. Sat and Sun only. Good guided tour. Lots if interesting stuff, and great displays, but can't see the sub. It's behind plexiglass in a tank of solution and dimly lit. You can barely make it out. I was disappointed. I wish they would put more underwater lights in the tank. Maybe... 更多
Please see my review under the subject, H. L. Hunley Confererate Civil War submarine. It's well worth the visit, and reservations might be necessary depending on the time or day.
Were there approx. 10 years ago and what an amazing transformation and more accomplishments regarding this great historical event. The tour was great and informative and learned a lot more & the museum was done in such an amazing way. What a learning experience
Interesting visit and interesting to learn about the H.L. Hunley. Lots of exhibits. The only thing is that you cannot see the Hunley. It's submerged in a vat of caustic fluid. You look at it from above, but with the glass doors you can't even get close enough to see it well or take a good photo. The docents shared... 更多
I went to the conservation center w/ my sister in law since seeing the submarine is on her bucket list because she loves maritime history. Me, not so much. But it was interesting. The tour was informative. Its crazy to think about men had to sit in that sub as small as it was. Although maritime history isnt necessary my... 更多
