描述:

Of Charleston's many fine house museums, only the Edmondston-Alston House...

Of Charleston's many fine house museums, only the Edmondston-Alston House (constructed in 1825 and enhanced in 1838) commands a magnificent view of Charleston Harbor.

From its piazza, General P. T. Beauregard watched the fierce bombardment of Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861, signaling the start of the Civil War. And on December 11 of the same year, the house gave refuge to General Robert E. Lee the night a wide-spreading fire threatened his safety in a Charleston hotel.

Much like the Middleton Place House Museum, the collection at the Edmondston-Alston House Museum consists of pieces that belonged to the family, reflecting not only family history but American history.

Despite the ravages of the Civil War, the Earthquake of 1886 and numerous hurricanes, the Alston family pieces remain in place much as they have for over 150 years. Notable in the collection is an original print of the Ordinance of Secession, portraits, dining room table, gas lights, mirror and exquisite interior woodwork.

A beautifully maintained house on the Battery. Many of the pieces belonged to the family, including some fabulous sterling. A great way to experience another more gracious time while escaping the heat and bright sun!

This home is full of history and the tour is absolutely wonderful, not to mention the view from the second floor, overlooking the bay and Fort Sumter in the distance. The history is fascinating and the furnishings authentic. This place has a wonderful history and is well worth your time to visit and tour.

No photos inside was disappointing. Still a privately owned property and therefore a small number of rooms were allowed to be toured. The guide gave an interesting history of the house and its owners how it related to the Civil War/Fort Sumter era.

Fascinating history as told by very knowledgeable and engaging staff. They seem truly interested and eager to share. So interesting to hear all that this house has "seen" and survived over so many years. We also took advantage of the discounted rate to see this and Middleton Place. Enjoyed both.

Overall: The docents at this house were tremendous. Very knowledgeable and really gave a nice tour. The house itself if very nice and conjures up a lot of questions about life during the 18th and 19th centuries. The good: All of it. Takes less than an hour of your time.

Truly enjoyed seeing this part of Charleston. It was a slice of life and time. Our guide was a vast source of knowlege. The stories came to life. We are glad to have obtained the pass for 7 historic places from the visitor center.

Neat old house with a good view. $12/person is kind of expensive for what you get. You don't get to see all the rooms because one of the heirs is living upstairs. Also, they don't take you to see kitchen or slave/servant areas. No pictures inside allowed.

We did the tour while staying at 21 East Battery. The tour was interesting and I would definitely recommend it for any history buffs.
