This extraordinary building was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer, an eccentric scholar of tile making who not only inherited a family fortune but who also designed and manufactured famously beautiful tiles of his own at a nearby factory that you can also tour. As a young man he studied castle architecture along with tile and pottery, and this house... 更多
This is a must see! This was very interesting. All the items-- tile, furniture etc. was impressive to look at. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. She was very patient, even when we were all waiting on a lady (that was taking a selfie), so that we can continue to the next room. Knowing... 更多
Foothill Castle is a good stop for anyone interested in art, architecture, history or just pretty sites. Built by Henry Mercer in 1908, you meander through twists and halls, up and down stairs to come across small and medium size rooms, decorated all along with handmade or imported tiles. Many tiles tell stories such as the arrival of Columbus. Other tiles... 更多
This is a really a remarkable place. It's hard to describe in words. Henry Chapman Mercer made tiles, and designed his home to be his show case and museum of his work. My wife and I were in awe of the detail this man took in designing his home and tiles. If your into architecture and design, then I highly... 更多
A very interesting place with lots of charm and history! This self guided tour is a great way to spend a couple of hours. It was cool to see the painstaking process of making tiles!
Henry Mercer's personal work of love. Hand crafted in cement, Mercer molded the structure in a completely unique fashion. Well worth the short drive.
The home of Henry Chapman Mercer was exquisite! The whole structure is made of concrete and beautifully decorated with art that is made up of uniquely style/shapes and sizes of tiles. Incredible! I would have given this five stars...However, you're not allowed to photograph inside the castle. Regardless if you're shooting without a flash. I managed to shoot two photos... 更多
The home of Henry Chapman Mercer is a fine example of poured-in-place concrete. It has 44 rooms, over 200 windows, 18 fireplaces and 10 bathrooms but is in need of work. I fully understand that home built in the early 1900's would have some issues but why not refurbish the interior with the pastel colors of the past and not... 更多
We enjoyed this tour, there are a lot of stairs so if you can not do stairs well I would not recommend this. It is really a very interesting place. I wish I could have taken photos of the different rooms but you are not permitted to take any inside.
