This place was fantastic, loved seeing the ruins and reading about the history. Kids loved climbing over the fort and looking in and around the bunkers. Very informative.
And crawl around the bunkers. Interesting view. Like a set of ruins, but modern all cement. Interesting historical information. A lovely stop in the area.
The Battery Russell is located in Fort Stevens State Park. The concrete artillery gun battery (historical site) had several rooms but the big guns were gone. It was still interesting to see. We spent about 20 minutes at the battery and another couple hours at the rest of the park. There is a $5 per car entry fee and that... 更多
The only point fired on in Oregon during WWII, the place is in tact, barely. There's a limited amount of time left to look at where soldiers worked and lived. The poor old place is crumbling, and some parts are roped off. There is a small military museum on site. The sites and sounds of the terrain are beautiful. You... 更多
This is the area fortified to protect the Columbia River entrance. This area was shelled by the Japanese during WW2---bet you didn't know that! the museum and bunkers are not to be missed. the museum contains a lettter dated in the 1950's by the commander of the sub that fired the shells. Volunteers maintained the fort and provide docent led... 更多
Fun place to explore the history of the area. Lots of room for the kids to run around and explore. Amazes me this was here even and the history behind it is even more amazing. A great place to stop!
Stopped at Battery Russell first on our way to the shipwreck Peter Iredale down the road. Battery Russell was shelled by an enemy sub during World War Two and is only military post on US soil to have been. It is named after a General Russell who died in the Civil War and had commanded Fort Yamhill.
This is probably one of my favorite places in the world. I am a huge war history buff and the ambiance of this place is amazing! When you walk thru the main building you feel the history come alive in all your senses. Then the walk to higher ground and finding all the smaller outpost, it's just a cool feeling... 更多
