You can walk the entire business district in about an hour. There were a number of antique stores that we were interested, but in my opinion were way over priced.
Luckily we had some awesome B&B hosts and a couple of really great pub/wineries to visit. The downtown shopping is in need of updates and pizzazz. Lots of closed businesses on a Saturday and Sunday with people walking around wondering what to see. Missed opportunities for sure. Many folks diverting to Hood River to spend their money.
But unfortunately, The Dalles is a weary town situated in a historical location...made disappointing by the power dam which obliterated the waterfalls and rapids which made this place so famous in the Oregon Trail days... The Columbia River Gorge is spectacular, but the town of The Dalles...miss-able for sure.
We traveled through the Dalles on a beautiful summer day. Stopping to watch the wind surfers on the Columbia River. We were lucky that it was a day when they were "surfing for a cure". The wind surfers we also flying kites, many were in clever designs and shapes. My grandkids loved it.
Get off the interstate and take a few minutes to visit the scenic downtown section of The Dalles. Several good breweries, fabulous views of the Columbia River, and restaurants to choose from. You won't be disappointed.
Came here to walk along the waterfront and stock up. Nice town, friendly people. Free parking for the Waterfront walkway. Nice views, but very windy.
Drop in get gas and food several hotels if you need them .There is a Fred Myer dollar store and lots of fast food this is a great pit stop off of I84
A Small Waterfront City in Oregon. The City is small but with very interesting shops and views. We stopped by the city on our way to Hood River ,much visited and liked town near by. But Dallas has equally nice things to offer and is much quite.Visit the Dallas Dam if you have time.Check fortimings in advance.
The Dalles is about 20 min drive from Hood River and it is worth a visit. It lacks the vibes of Hood River, the hotels, the breweries and the restaurants. Nevertheless it is a large town on the river with a lot of history and some historic buildings. It is also remarkable to observe the transition in the Columbia River... 更多
