When in central Oregon you owe it to yourself to drive to Sisters and head out on the Mackenzie highway (242) to the junction of Highway 126 then head north to the junction of the Santiam highway (highway 20) back to Sisters. This is probably the best drive in the state of Oregon and not to be missed. Take your... 更多
If you can get to Sisters in good weather before around June 20, you can bike up to the summit of McKenzie Pass before the highway opens to the public. What a terrific view and experience. It is one of the best bike rides that Oregon has to offer.
You can do the, "loop" from the town of Sisters, over McKenzie Pass, through McKenzie Bridge and back to Sisters...I think about 80 miles......Or if you're coming from Sisters or Eugene you can use it as an alternative route. Be very aware this is a narrow, winding road and you need to stay on your side. Taking the corners too... 更多
I've traveled around the world and consider this to be one of the most beautiful drives on Earth. If it is open (closes during the winter) take the time to drive the Old McKenzie Highway. You can stop off at the lava house, which is incredible and you'll see lakes that are absolutely pristine.
Weather permitting, this drive should be on your itinerary when visiting Oregon. It will be quite a few degrees cooler than lower altitudes, so dress warm and bring water. There are serviceable restrooms as well which is a big plus.
At 5335 elevation on Oregon 242, McKenzie's Pass is one of those must roads if your traveling thru Oregon. Unreal views of the Sisters mounatin pass and Mt Washington to the north. A very cool observatory at the top of the pass is made from the lava around it. Some walk, hike and bike it, so be careful to those... 更多
The McKenzie Pass Road is gorgeous. Do to the tight curves it forces one to slow down and enjoy the lava fields, trees and rivers along the way. We took this route because the Santiam Pass was shut down for 4 hrs. because of an accident. Taking this route added about hour trip to Black Butte Ranch. As noted, there... 更多
We were staying in Bend. One afternoon,we decided to take this drive through the Cascades. The drive starts in the town of Sisters. The signage is good. We stopped at the Dee Wright Observatory and looked at all the mountain peaks and lava fields. This building is made from lava rock. We drove slowly around all the hairpin turns to... 更多
