Went on a day hike with my Lab from the Century Lakes Hwy. We did a loop just to make it interesting especially since the pup doesn't understand the difference between magnetic north and true north. Stopped for lunch on the high point of the trail and just took in the view. I guess this is why we live in... 更多
I hiked to the summit at age 65 with a friend. From my home in Bend, it took 11 hours for the commute to the trailhead, for the climb, and back home at the end of the adventure. It is a varied experience; staring with dense forest trails, then open hillsides with lakes, then a steep climb with challenging traction... 更多
Everyone gets out and floats the river on a hot day. Even the Bend Metro Parks and Recreation Dept. has a bus that runs just to service the River Rats. You can go online to get the bus route and schedule. Basically, it runs from end of school to Labor Day, all along the river, from the Riverbend Park to... 更多
Living in Sunriver 45 minutes from the Devils Lake trailhead, climbing South Sister was an obligatory rite of passage when I moved to Central Oregon. After about 20 ascents, my preference is to do it early in the season when the slopes are still covered by snow. With crampons and a pair of trekking poles, you can traverse the slopes... 更多
My brother and I hiked South Sister. The day we hiked was overcast. We has read that it was not recommended attempt to summit on anything but a perfect day, I see why now. I split up the hike into thirds in my head for ease of explaining. The first third is lots of uphill in heavily wooded forest. Beautiful... 更多
The area around the South Sister is one of my favorite. Several lakes, diverse terrain, a waterfall or two if you know where to look and wildlife. I've climbed the South Sister a couple of times too and it's not for the weak of heart as it is pretty strenuous.
This South Sister is part of the Three Sisters, a complex volcano with three volcanic peaks in central Oregon. The South Sister is the tallest with its peak at 10,538. The Middle and North Sisters sit next to each other and are 10,047 and 10,085, respectively. In the air, the visit is spectacular!
Left Devil's lake parking lot around 6 am to hike up the South Sister. A steep climb to start up the Devil's Lake trail but once you are out of the woods, the trail is not as steep. Great views of everything as you get closer to the summit. The top is incredible.
Such an amazing place. If you are close to the mountains then you will see tall pine trees and lovely streams. As you head east the landscape quickly changes to desert. Within 15-20 minutes you go from forests to high plateau. It happens so quickly that you never notice the change!
