First opened in 1970, this museum, housed in a spectacular 19th century convent building, showcases the history of Cooktown, from Cook's landing in 1770 to the more recent past. The exhibits include the original anchor and one of the cannon jettisoned from Cook's Endeavour in 1770, items from the Palmer River gold rush and personal items and stories from Cooktown's early residents, making this an unmissable part of your visit to Cooktown. The James Cook Museum is operated by the National Trust Queensland, a membership-based community organization dedicated to the promotion and care of Queensland's cultural and natural heritage.

What a beautiful old building, and full of very interesting items and info, not really expensive and well staffed. Great stories to read all the way through gave the museum some life. Well worth the visit.

We enjoyed our time at the museum. It certainly gave you a good outline of Cooktown history. Staff were ok.... They answered all our questions. However you don't know what you need to ask. We found the volunteers at the Historical Centre far more informative.

This museum is well worth a look -they have Captain Cook's real anchor there that he had to release when he was stuck on a reef. The excerpts from Cook's diary are fascinating. Importantly, they also include exhibits from the local Aboriginal people's perspective. I came away knowing a lot more about the rich culture of the local people here... 更多

James Cook played a huge role in the establishment for white Australians, & this museum shows so much of what he experiences, especially during his time in Far North Queensland. Definitely worth a visit.

Once the Sister of Mercy convent school, this museum takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of Cooktown. Artificacts, including the Endeavour's cannon and anchor, are well showcased with excellent narratives accompanying the displays. This museum provides a comprehensive overview of Cooktown's rich indigenous, European and Chinese history including Captain Cook's landing and subsequent stay in 1770. The... 更多

Not to be missed when in Cooktown - there is a fascinating array of artifacts and memorabilia and Captain Cook's anchor which he lost at the time he was there in 1770 and was found and recovered around 1970. The building itself has an amazing history and was fortunate to have been saved.

If you are in Cooktown you can't leave without stopping in to have a look. If you want to made the most of it give yourself at least 2 or 3 hours as there is a lot of reading if you want to. There is more to it then simply Captain COOK and and the Endevour but of course these... 更多

Complemented our visit to the James Cook Museum in Whitby UK. A talented man. This is a very comprehensive display of local history both European and indigenous. A beautiful old building built by the Catholic Church for the Sisters of Mercy - how they must have suffered in their habits in the heat. Worth a visit.

This is a great place to visit. The entrance gives you the history of Cook and the Endeavour and is beautifully set up including the anchor which is huge. This was the smallest of five anchors on the Endeavour! Upstairs is worth a visit with the history of the old convent and Cooktown with a whole room devoted to the... 更多

The entrance was good with the Endeavour's anchor and cannon, plus some information boards, but the rest was just a load of old stuff from the convent. Hardly worth the money.
