Two months ago we went to cemetery to celebrat the life of our Brother in law. A very special person. This is a very lovely place for one of our Angels to spend the rest of his time to rest.
The older section of Oakdale is quite lovely and hosts the resting places of many famous Wilmingtonians.....the entire Bellamy family and David Brinkley just to name a few, but many more. The live oak section is also beautiful. The cemetery offers guided tours, but just walking around on your own for an afternoon is pleasant.
We were on our way to the National Cemetery and came across this one and decided to stroll in for a bit. Got the see the grand peacock in full glory strutting around.
We enjoyed walking around seeing the various stones; nice cemetery but it was a little shabby. We did see a peacock sitting on a grave stone and that made our day. It's worth a visit if you are already in the area. The National Cemetery is only a few block away and worth a drive through.
We took the guided tour and really could go back every Saturday. I was amazed by it's size and historical figures. Guide was entertaining and knowledgeable.
On occasion I like to visit a cemetery or graveyard to visit the dead, pay my respects to those who have gone before me, and learn something of history in the process. Oakdale Cemetery was a peaceful place to visit and very historic. If your desires are the same as mine I think you will find Oakdale what you are... 更多
Nice funerary sculpture. Beautiful trees and shrubs. I was told Confederate burials were held here but didn't see any. The place is slightly overgrown.
The incredible design, with curved roadways, circular and raised sections and historical background is fascinating. We spent an hour driving around, stopping to read some of the plaques and tombstones and taking some pictures. I could have spent another 2-3 hours there easily.
What a beautiful place to ride and walk through! The employees will give you a map of the cemetery and point out interesting places to stop. Old and well taken care of. Lots of history to learn here!
