This is something you do not want to miss in Beaufort. It is full of Beaufort's history from geography to Black Beard. It is a great place for families and children of all ages. Some hands-on.
The docents at this museum were extremely helpful and know their stuff. They have a big exhibit of artifacts from Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge which is very interesting. A good mix of exhibits on fishing, nature, and history. All exhibits are well done.

Awesome museum featuring exhibits on boats and items relating to this small coastal port town. Best part was the exhibit of the items from the Queen Annes Revenge which was Blackbeard the pirates ship that sunk just off the Beaufort coast. Very interesting exhibit. Best part of this museum was the price! Its FREE! Can't beat that!
The museum contains artifact brought up from the sunken ship queens Ann revenge. It was very interesting. There is a scavenger hunt work sheet for kids, they can check off items as they find then in the museum,
We visited this museum during a trip to the coast, and were very impressed by the quality and breadth of the exhibits. The museum covered a wide range of topics and had many hands-on exhibits that held the interest of children and adults. Well worth an hour or two of your time!
The museum offered a scavenger hunt for elementary children that allowed our grandson to look for artifacts then we talked about what the were. There are artifacts from Blackbeard's ship, Queen Anne's Revenge, as well as other nautical artifacts from the area. The video about the Blackbeard and the ship's sinking is far to long for children. The Beaufort site of the North Carolina Maritime Museum offers something for everyone. Boat builders can step across the street into the construction area to watch fine craftsmen at work. Boat users or just casual visitors and their children can find something of interest. Young children will enjoy this museum (up to early teens). Its also close to the Front Street Boardwalk and many good restaurants.
This is a great attraction (free or you can make a contribution) for all ages. Young children are given a game to find certain exhibits then receive a badge for participating. The Blackbeard exhibit is very good.
