We came here for the rail bikes, and arrived a couple hours ahead of our scheduled time. There are a lot of closed stores and not much to do. This town has definitely peaked many, many years ago. Very sad.
Don't miss the Community Store, stopping by the Library to see an amazing collection of stuffed animals of the Adirondacks (yes, this sounds odd but should not be missed). We booked a campsite on an island on Middle Saranac Lake. This was our first time camping in the Adirondacks, and the first time camping at a location that was only accessible by boat. I've been here several times and will come back again and again ! Quaint town with nice little shops but just a short drive and there are big stores and nice restaurants. Very happy withe the quality of services and friendly people here. Beautiful views !
For over a hundred years now, Saranac has been a destination. A beautiful village on an even prettier lake. A real jewel. Can be crowded, of course, on summer days. But nothing like some of the larger places. In the Fall, on the right mid-week day, it's a treasure.
Make sure when you are in Lake Placid to come over to Saranac Lake. There are wonderful galleries, a couple nice stores, including the Community Store and Donnelly's Ice Cream (be prepared for a line no matter what time of day during the peak season) Also plan on the winter to see the Ice Palace and the Winter Carnival.
