There are some people, and I'm one of them, that likes to walk through old cemeteries. This one is pretty interesting for the obvious reason that Billy the Kid is buried somewhere in this cemetery. No one knows where; a flood washed out all the old gravestones. Pals.
The museum is closed, but we found the grave yard interesting to walk through. Several old graves, some of small children, some with interesting stories on the tombstone. The museum has gone out of business recently. But the real attraction is still open- the cemetery. It is free and well-maintained. Though it is not definitive that the grave location is correct because of early flooding it really does not matter. It is still something all Old West lovers should see. This was the second time that I have been here in a time of 20 years. The first was in my youth and the history and educational side of this site was amazing. Fast forward to today and news that they are closing this site down by the end of August. Enjoy it and the actual grave
We went to the Billy the Kid Museum first then here to see grave and thought the museum would have more information on Fort Sumner and how it was day to day. Boot Hill - Hells Half Acre...the old Ft. Sumner Post Cemetary. Almost nothing left there. What this place sadly lacks is a good explanation as to how many graves it originally contained, when it was first installed, and when it was given up.
