Easy to drive by if you are not paying attention. Not very far off the highway near Mound City, MO and on the way to Big Lake State Park. We did the auto tour route and saw deer, tons of birds, beaver dams, it was huge and the plant and wildlife was spectacular. We went a little after the water... 更多
This is easy to find off route 29, halfway between Kansas City and Omaha. We met super enthusiastic staff and volunteers who are very helpful in offering suggestions to tailor your visit. We hiked to the bluff to get an visual overview of the refuge (a bit of a butt buster with steps, but worth the effort) and then slowly... 更多
What a thrill when a 100,000 or more snow geese decided to fly. The sound is terrific and the visual tremendous. Don't forget to bring your camera (preferably a telephoto lens). The beaver are also quite interesting.
Eagle Days at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge lasts for 2 weekends a year. I attended for the first time on December 6, 2015 and thought it was well worth the drive from Kansas City! The refuge would be a great place to visit many other times as well, and for people of all ages. Peak Eagle migration happens in... 更多

They had a live golden eagle and a bald eagle that were injured and are now recovered but unable to live in the wild. Then off we went into the bus to drive around... 更多
We enjoyed the pretty drive through the refuge and saw some birds. I think during different times of the year there would be more. It's a beautiful area.
I drove through the Refuge in early August on a fairly warm day. I imagine it is much better in cooler times of the year. Still, very nice road, takes 30-60 minutes depending on your stops.
Just missed most of the spring migration and still saw over 20 bird species in less than a couple of hours plus lots of busy beavers. A pair of nesting Bald Eagles with two chicks in the nest was a bonus!
By watching the Snow Goose count in late fall and early spring, it's possible to time your visit to see... 更多
This wildlife area has easy access. The ponds were still frozen when we drove through. We saw 2 coyotes walking... 更多
