People called Oliver Anderson’s house “the best arranged dwelling house west of St. Louis.” But it became more famous as the center of a bloody three-day Civil War battle in 1861. Walk through the Anderson House at Battle of Lexington Historic Site and marvel at the bullet holes still in the walls and evidence of the cannon shots. The battlefield is peaceful now, dotted with orchards and gardens, but battle scars remain. A visitor center provides a comprehensive view of the battle that raised Southern spirits that the war was winnable and made Unionists in Missouri think twice about whether they could hold the state. The site is located in the town of Lexington and is one of the closest Civil War sites to Interstate 70.

If you love the Civil War or if you love old homes, the site has what you need. They have a great museum and I recommend the tour. In the winter you have to call ahead but from March thru Oct they have tours everyday. The battlefield walk is short but it gives you a sense of what it would... 更多

If you're visiting the Lexington site in the off season, make sure to inquire about the Anderson house tour at least 24 hours in advance. We weren't aware of that and made a bit of a trip out there only to be disappointed after hearing how good the house tour was. The museum is also nice, packed with information but... 更多

What an impressive site. An interesting piece of history, an unusual perspective on the war, and a well-preserved battle site. We had a great time checking it out and wish we could have stayed for the tour!

I remember going to Anderson House on field trips as a kid but I never had the kind of experience we had in July. It was mostly because of our tour guide. I think it was Jenny. She made it so interesting. This house and museum is a must see for everyone studying the Civil War. Very affordable and the... 更多

The Civil War battles were not just in the east, but the ones in Missouri were just as important, as the Union had to secure this state that leaned toward the Confederacy . If they did so, they would be better positioned to invade the deep south. This battle along with the one in Springfield were won by the Confederacy,... 更多

We went to the historical museum/site "the Battle of Lexington", what a great history lesson and Missouri's ties to the past. We were enthralled by the "hemp bales" and their use in the battle. We walked outside and around the back to see Anderson House. We didn't have time for a tour of the inside but enjoyed looking at the... 更多

The battlefield and human loss was quite small in comparison to Gettysburg, but the story of the battle will capture your attention. I learned that slavery was very prevalent and accepted in this area and many local strongly supported the Confederacy. The history of the mansion house that served as a hospital and the evidence it shows today from battle... 更多

This is a great place to stop and take in a little history of the Battle of Lexington. The setting is during the Civil War and the Confederate's vs the Rebel's. Make sure you take the tour to learn about the battle and see where and how they lived back in the civil war times. It is a beautiful setting... 更多

My husband is the serious military history buff. I am very casual, and not very serious. Give me the gist of the battle, then let me go explore! Let me go stand on the field of battle, read the plaques, review the map and imagine out the various theaters of the battle out for myself. The house and garden are... 更多

Certainly if you are into civil war history it will be very interesting for you but it is a little on the smaller side. There is a Visitor's Center and trails and grounds to walk around. Also a couple little stores. But overall it's probably not more than a half an hour's worth of touring. There is also a museum... 更多
