Jesse James, son of a Baptist minister, was born at the family home in Kearney, Missouri, in 1847. Barely 16, he followed his older brother, Frank, into the Civil War. While Frank was a member of Quantrill’s guerillas, Jesse rode with Bloody Bill Anderson. When the war ended, Jesse returned home and joined other former Confederate guerillas in a life of outlawry. Jesse’s boldness and flamboyance as a bank and train robber, combined with sensational publicity from newspapers and dime novels, soon made his a household name. A tour through the restored home will take visitors back to where the legend began. Before walking the trail to the farmhouse, a twenty minute movie recaps the history of Frank and Jesse James and exploits of the outlaws. The museum displays the world’s largest collection of James family artifacts. Jesse’s boots and Frank’s surrender letter tend to captivate visitors. Guests then follow the paved winding trail to the farmhouse and walk along the creek where, as young boys, Frank and Jesse spent much of their time playing. In the yard of the family home is Jesse’s original burial site, the place where his mother once sold souvenir rocks from his grave for twenty five cents. Upon completion of the tour guests will want to browse the museum's gift shop. A wide variety of books relating to the period are available as well as t-shirts, mugs, and many other souvenir keepsakes. The Jesse James Farm and Museum is owned and operated by the Department of Clay County Parks, Recreation, Historic Sites and Tourism.

We take out of town guests here all the time. The museum provides a balanced account of a tumultuous time in our country's history. Many folks are not aware of the border wars and how contentious it was here in the years before and after the civil war. It's worth the trip to Kearney.

Visiting the home of the James brothers provided a very different picture of their lives and the times in which they lived.as have been presented by movies or T.V. This visit corrected many of the mistakes put forth as truth in the media. ..Even the most recent "The American West" was very inaccurate which I learned from listening and learning... 更多

This historic site in Kearney MO is well worth the trip. Unlike so many places that pull you in and then try to sell you a bunch of trinkets and worthless junk, this is the real deal. I have been here on 3 occasions with the first stop back in the late 70s. Some things have changed since then and... 更多

We visited both this farm in Kearney and the Jesse James Home in St. Joseph, and this if far, far better. The folks working in the museum are extremely nice and helpful, but most of all, the museum is simply much better laid out, much more interesting and informative. A number of interesting artifacts in the museum to see even... 更多

We went to the Jesse James museum as a little impromptu trip, and glad we're did! It's full of history and artifacts from the James family, as well as a lovely little tour of the James house, which is surreal to think about being in the same house as the notorious Jesse and Frank James. It did not disappoint and... 更多

The museum takes longer than you'd think. Make sure you allow enough time for that. Touring the actual house is about a 1/2 hour. Very interesting house, grounds and museum has tons of artifacts and facts plus a nice gift shop.

Thank goodness for foresight! This is an amazingly well kept historical site. The actual home has been added onto (in the 30's) and the original structure has obviously required some upkeep, but it's truly stunning the shape this home is in. There are original floorboards and wallpaper, and everything is painstakingly arranged according to the period. It helped I suppose... 更多

The property is well maintained and you learn the real truth about Jesse James. This is a good place to take any child that is in school.

History comes alive as museum goers view an introductory video & memorabilia from the James & Samuels families. A guide then accompanies groups to the well preserved James home place. Our guide gave us insight into some of the events surrounding the James - Younger gang along with historical perspective & political climate. Very interesting & not to be missed!
