Nobody knows about the civilization that created those statues, so you don't really need a guide. Just read about it before you travel there, and read the information you'll find in the little "passport" they'll give you at the entrance. That's it. Enjoy the walk and discover all these fascinating statues in beautiful natural surroundings.
Me and my partner walked to the park from San Agustin, an easy walk apparently 3k but did feel a little more. But there is also a bus (mini van) for 1000 or 2000pesos. The people who care for this area have gone to great measures to protect these artifacts for posterity. They're also presented in a way that interesting to all tourists, whether you're interested in history or not. It was a great way to spend an afternoon in San Agustin.
