We arrived in mid October and the station was already closed for the winter. I think our travel book needs an update on closures as this happened to us several times in Michigan. We did walk around the buildings and peek in the windows.
This station is pre coast guard, it gave me a feel for how hard of work the men at that time worked. There is a boat house and a house where they lived and worked. There is also a nice sandy beach.. The volunteers where very knowledgeable and eager to impart information.
This is a modest museum with volunteer docents. But worth the stop as it gives one a sense of how life saving on a rough lake could be before today...and it remains a dangerous duty even now. There are a couple of boats to see and the house with a nice selection of artifacts and information on the time period... 更多
This is a nice little museum at the end of Sleeping Bear Point. To get to it, you have to drive through Glen Haven Historical Village on route 109. The museum is very interesting & is self guided. There is a donation box. There are some exhibits outside also. Clean restrooms. The parking lot is pretty small & I noticed... 更多
There is a lifeboat to tour before heading to the old boat house to view surf boats and a Breeches buoy set up. The old station has been turned into a small museum which has both historical information and exhibits. The exhibits include a Fresnel lens. It does not take long to tour.
We LOVE this place because of the beach. It's a quiet long stretch of beach that makes you feel you are somewhere tropical....not Michigan. The water is SO blue. It's a must see. We always stop by the museum too. Looking for to taking our 5 year old soon.
Very interesting museum with a very knowledgeable volunteer on hand to explain the various items on display in the boat house. The station house had several informative interactive displays. Well worth a visit.
The Maritime Museum is worth a stop if you enjoy maritime history. There are a few Coast Guard rescue vessels on display. And the main house has neat exhibits with a video showing a Coast Guard rescue drill. Views of Lake Michigan from the porch are amazing, too!
So glad we stopped here, this a really neat place and we really enjoyed learning about the rescues. Rick, the volunteer, was very friendly and answered all of our questions. It was a joy to talk with him. This place is definitely worth a stop, loved it!
