We wandered in here, after finding out that the railroad and transportation museums were closed. We were cabin-camping at Herrington Manor State Park. The lady at the front desk greeted us warmly. We went from room to room, admiring the vast collections of historic objects and pieces relating to Garrett County !!!!! There is a train in the first room,... 更多
My husband and I visited this site during the Autumn Glory Festival in October, 2016. It was quite crowded but it was on the day of the main parade. The museum is free which is great! There are several rooms and each features a different theme on the history of Garrett County, with displays of artifacts and texts on persons... 更多
... this museum allows for a deep and wide view of a town and a county in their heyday... when the railways going through Oakland turned it into an important relay node towards other cities.. pictures of now defunct hotels and busy railway construction point to an industrial and social activity that would be difficult to evince from today's relative... 更多
For such a small town, Oakland, Maryland has three wonderful, quality museums to delight history lovers, all within sight of each other. There is the B & O Train Station with its focus on the importance of the railroad to the area, the Garrett County Transportation Museum filled with a large array of vehicles....cars, buggies, boats, bicycles, fire truck, etc.... 更多
everything was broken up in to section would made it easier to focus on areas. it was clean and the lady working was very friendly. lots of history in the building. the rooms never duplicated so it was nice.
This museum was a delightful surprise when we first visited it. The displays are well done, showing the history of the area. The support staff was more then willing to explain and answer questions we had. This museum doesn't take long to tour, but worth every minute.
Loved the displays and the people (volunteers) are so helpful! Great information relayed about the history of the railroad in WMD and the development of Garrett County - Wisp history very informative.
This is small museum, two floors. As a professional historian, it wasn't the most organized and streamlined museum. However, it has some very interesting items, good local history pieces and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the staff. Support them!
Rooms depicting the local history and items from those eras were great. Staff are there for information, but you tour the rooms at your own pace.
