This place is lovely and well worth making the trip to see it. Transports you right back to medieval times. Surrounded by beautiful forest, it has amazing views from the top. Toilets and souvenir/snack kiosk available.
Interesting ruins. You are allowed to wander freely, without an irritating tour guide. They also give guided tours (only in french, of course.) The tours are very interesting and you can walk to the top of two of them. More area is roped off than I would prefer, but still there was a lot to see.
Approaching the Tours de Merle is like driving through Lord of the Rings country - forests and great hills, twisting roads and rocky outcrops. The first glimpse is magical and it just gets better!
To be able to explore anywhere you want is amazing in this overly protective era. It's not an expensive trip and the refreshments are not expensive...
