This is a good way to get acquainted with the history of Cumberland, MD. It shows some of the major manufacturing that was done and that has since departed. For those of us who grew up here it is a bit sad to see what we have lost. But there are some interesting displays that are worth a look.
The folks behind the desk could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Each room has its own theme. Glass, tires, fire department, geological history, etc. It is worth the stop. There is an elevator to take you to the 2nd floor.
Free but be kind a eave a donation! Lots of displays of local history and "goings on" in the area over the years. Well laid out with friendly and helpful staff. Nice for an hour or so.
From Glassware to Whittling, B&O Railroad to the C&O Canal, Kelly Tires to The National Road it is all here. They have a very nice collection of local brewery and distillery items. I also enjoyed the archeology and wildlife exhibits.
Docent advised, "You can see the exhibits in any order you like!" He was correct. Loved the exhibit on breweries and distilleries of the region, the most. Great pieces on the tire industry and on a local artist of note.
The museum has a variety of well designed exhibits that highlight different facets of Allegany County history. Many of the exhibits focus on industries that were once prevalent which fits well with the industrial heritage of the area. It is definitely worth spending an hour so there.
