This trail is well maintained and so beautiful to walk, run or ride bike on. The walk is on the old railroad track bed and is so beautiful along the Kennebec river running through Gardiner, Farmingdale, Hallowell ad Augusta.
I was going to a convention at the Civic Center, and brought my MTB to ride the trail on Saturday before returning to Boston.
My one suggestion would be to start at the southern end in Gardiner, unless that means extra driving both ways from Augusta. Since it's a rail trail, there are no steep grades, but you're following a...
Paved trail reaching from the Hannaford parking lot in Gardiner to downtown Augusta. Perfect for some activity, goes right by the YMCA and through downtown Hallowell where you can sit and enjoy the waterfront. No major safety concerns, a friendly and safe place to walk/run/bike. Bring a friend at dusk or at night.
I "hiked" up the Rail Trail from Gardiner to Hallowell and back the other day. Lovely riverside walk in pristine condition. The Kennebec is one of Maine's most beautiful rivers, and the rail trail takes full advantage of it.
The Rail Trail is still one of my favorite, easy walks, but over the past couple years has become a major hotspot for violence. Women, especially, do not walk the trail after dusk, and even during the day be sure to walk with a companion. Or, better yet, a group.
On our way home from Acadia National Park, we stopped here to take a ride. It is a 13 mile round trip. The path is paved at the beginning and at the end but the middle is missing. We asked where the trail was when we entered the town of Hallowell and were told to ride behind the buildings in...
nice, level walk along the Kennebec. The people who are also walking are very friendly and the bikers give a heads up that they are approaching. I have seen many bald eagles in the summer along the walk and you can see sturgeon jumping out during mating season.
