Not sure why the park is closed... I've also driven thru Jct City for many years and this time decided to pull off and make the hike with my son. Unfortunately, the barriers are still up. This is a cool piece of history that needs to be opened.

Please note that Fort Riley has closed this park, at least temporarily. Visits to this cannon are not permitted, though it is visible for observation from the base of the park. All of the points of interest on the Fort Riley installation are still open and available, but require one to gain access to the base to see them.
This is a really cool bit of history and it's very accessible. The cannon is visible from I-70 (exit 300 I think), take the exit and there is a parking area.
