The oldest stone house in Illinois. The way that it was constructed, fallen into disrepair and then saved is quite a story. Our guide did an amazing job. It was as though we were in the 1800's
I think we went into house in between tour times due to a fluke of misinformation and an unlocked door. The tour guide was so nice and gave us our own tour. It was very interesting.
It was interesting to go through the home and see the inside of Galena's oldest home and see a bunch of artifacts from the past, but the tour guide wasn't that great and rushed us through the house. It was a little interesting, but not worth the entrance fee.
I really wanted to visit this neat looking, really old house. I love old houses. But when we walked into the gift shop to buy tickets, the smell was so musty and the person at the counter just looked at us and asked, "Do you want something?" We got a combo deal to visit the Dowling House and the Belvedere Mansion. My expectations were low, but these two sites exceeded my expectations. We visited the Biltmore Estate in May. For the money, these two sites were much better.
