Going to Mass at St. John Cantius, especially the Christmas Midnight Mass, is extraordinary. It is a Latin mass with a full choir. If you ever went to a Catholic Church before Vatican II, this is the way the Mass was. The altar & chancel are beautifully decorated for Christmas and its holy days. Though long, the Mass is definitely... 更多
The church of St. John Cantius is a lovely early 19th century church built in the baroque style that is commonly found in the churches of Europe. It is one of the architectural jewels of Chicago churches. In addition, the church is home to the Canon Regulars of St. John Cantius, which is a religious order that celebrates the Latin... 更多
This is a church with gorgeous Baroque architecture, and traditional, liturgical stylings to the services. Similar to what you see in European churches. Most of their services are in Latin. There is at least one in English on Sunday though. If you're Catholic, there are excellent confessors here. This is not watered down Catholicism (thankfully). This is what your grandma... 更多
We went to the 12:30 Sunday service. I am a life-long Catholic but had never been to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (Tridentine High Mass in Latin). Basically, this is how mass was in my parent's day. Most of it was in Latin. Priest has his back to you. The priest chants quite a bit. You stand and kneel... 更多
while we were not able to attend mass at St. John Cantius. we did have time to pop in for a brief visit. So many beautiful parts of the church...the facade, the doors, the altar, the side altars, the confessionals, the ceilings, the chandeliers, the stained glass, the stations of the cross....all of it. Whether you're Catholic or a lover... 更多
There is so much history there, and the Mass was very traditional. (I attended the English Mass, but the church also does a Latin Mass several times a week.) I love everything about this parish from the Gothic pulpit to the stained glass to the liturgy. It's a must-see for anyone that enjoys old churches.
Amazing. Beautiful. Holy inspiration through "Sacred Restoration." A church restored to it's full early 20th century Glory. Went to morning Mass, " the ordinary form done properly" and evening Vespers. The Canon's Latin Chant during evening prayer was extraordinary. Ave Maria!
I attended an English language Mass in the Novus Ordo at St.John Cantius. It was a beautiful God-centered liturgy. Great music in a baroque church with wonderful art. Worth a visit not only by Catholics, but by anyone who appreciates beautiful art and architecture.
