Be sure to watch the staff feed the fish with the hopper in the back of their pickup. They drive around the ponds and the automatic feeder flows feed out into the ponds for the fish to eat. It's a beautiful drive to the hatchery up through the canyon and just past the facility is a trailhead you go in...
If you want to see 3 million Chinook salmon smolts and gorgeous views, Rapid River Fish Hatchery is a great place to stop by on your way through Riggins, ID. The hatchery is very well kept and the park next to the hatchery is beautiful. Great place to take the family for a little tour!
A good example of Salmon recovery but you will see a bit of waste near the end of the season which bothers us. We think the fish not needed for roe should be sold to the public rather than being disposed of. Lots of people could use the cheap nourishment.
The Idaho Fish & Game employees were great. We got a personal tour and a great education on how the facility work. This is still an outdoor hatchery. We were there just before they were ready to do spawning.
It's located right along the river. You can ask for a brief tour and watch the hatchery workers feed the fish. They seem to really focus on the sustainability of the fish and I enjoyed learning how they use the water from the river to raise the fish
