"The Square" sits above the Decatur Stop on the Atlanta Metro system (MARTA). It is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants. You may run into a few panhandlers but for the most part you'll see employees having lunch during the week and singles and couples roving at night.
This was a complete surprise. It was almost like an English village square. Old fashioned, with band stand, excellent cafe's, great variety of restaurants, shops, brilliant ice cream parlour and beautifully clean & well maintained. It is at the center of downtown Decatur and is a wonderful place to sit and watch people stroll by. In addition there are a number of wonderful local restaurants surrounding the square. Definitely worth seeing and dining.
Imagine a Norman Rockwell scene: The gazebo has a band playing, families are hanging out with picnics or ice cream, strollers, dogs, shoppers, and restaurants have patio tables for fast casual as well as fine dining. Whether there is a festival going on or just a sweet walk around downtown Decatur, this are is great for pics & just hanging out.
This is a nice little spot. But, the restaurants and shops are what really deserve the reviews. In the square, I mostly encountered amateur photographers annoyed with my wife and I that we were on THEIR square interrupting their photo shoots.
The Decatur Square provides a charming area to walk amidst a few shops and a few eateries. The parking is somewhat limited directly within the square but ample outside the square. The area appears to be safe and not to congested with automotive traffic.
The Decatur Square is the site of the annual Decatur Book Festival, which brings 75,000 visitors to the Square. The merchants, police, sanitation workers, and volunteers do a great job. At other times of the year, the square is still a great place to visit - especially for the many food options.
