This beautiful plantation represents the history and culture of Georgia’s rice coast. In the early 1800s, William Brailsford of Charleston carved a rice plantation from marshes along the Altamaha River. The plantation and its inhabitants were part of the genteel low country society that developed during the antebellum period. While many factors made rice cultivation increasingly difficult in the years after the Civil War, the family continued to grow rice until 1913.The enterprising siblings of the fifth generation at Hofwyl-Broadfield resolved to start a dairy rather than sell their family home. The efforts of Gratz, Miriam and Ophelia Dent led to the preservation of their family legacy. Ophelia was the last heir to the rich traditions of her ancestors, and she left the plantation to the state of Georgia in 1973.A museum features silver from the family collection and a model of Hofwyl-Broadfield during its heyday. A brief film on the plantation’s history is shown before visitors walk a short trail to the antebellum home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the home as Ophelia kept it with family heirlooms, 18th and 19th century furniture and Cantonese china. A stop on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, this is an excellent spot to look for herons, egrets, ibis and painted buntings. A nature trail that leads back to the Visitors Center along the edge of the marsh where rice once flourished.

Absolutely beautiful, rich in history. Worth the trip . We set aside an hour and 2 hours quickly went by. Very informative staff. Highly recommend this to anyone.

This plantation is so well preserved with all the original furnishings. As the guide said everything is there but the people. The tour guide was interesting and we really enjoyed it. It was a rice plantation and became a dairy farm. All the out buildings are there to look in and there's a museum and gift shop. The trees are... 更多

This hotel is kinda an antique. It's maintained really well & is pretty sweet with the mini kitchen. It's close to downtown shops, restaurants, & the Visitor Center. It's near a bike/walking path along a creek. Beds were stiffer which I prefer. Breakfast is not available; but, across the street is the amazing Moab Diner (60's style decor). We ate... 更多

Ranger Andy was most informative and accommodating. His knowledge of the inhabitants and their relationships within the community and beyond made the visit even more interesting. Well worth a visit into yesteryear!

This plantation was left much like it was when the last owner passed away in 1973. Her car keys are still in the ignition. Harvesting rice must have been deathly while working in the mud, August heat, and mosquitos. If only the trees could talk; some are over 800 years old. Highly recommend a visit.

This has to be one of the larges stands of old live oaks around, two are said to be near 800 yrs old. There are lots of out buildings on the property, the guide was VERY informative. The entire tour was very interesting, The two sisters that donated this beautiful property are an interesting story in them selves. They brought... 更多

We recently moved close to it about two years ago and just never made the effort to go visit the plantation. While family was down, we decided to make a visit to it. We were very pleasantly surprised...absolutely beautiful grounds and a nice step back in history.

Ranger Andy was very knowledgeable about the family and the plantation. We really enjoyed the guided tour. The main house and the welcome center are air-conditioned.

We had a few hours to venture out and we were not disappointed! This plantation is charming and the home is lovely. While listening to our guide, it was very easy to feel nostalgic while viewing the home in its original state. A true gem!

Easy to get to parking area, lots of shade trees and a wonderful breeze from the marsh. The guides for the house are really well informed. My guy answered all of the questions and even added little side stories about the family. The film before the tour is great explaining the background of the family and history of the plantation... 更多
