Due to the spill from dredging at the EPA clean up sight we were not allowed to go river rafting on our trip. It looked like a nice river but never got on it. So average is the best I can give it for now.
Animas River was beautiful...we weren't sure what to expect after the terrible spill, but by the time we arrive in Durange (August 17, 2015), the river was fine. We walked all week along the river on the Memorial Trail to downtown Durango and enjoyed its beauty every day.
I haven't been to Durango Colorado since 1998 and I was really looking forward to going there this year. This vacation was to celebrate my 50th B-Day. My wife said I needed to do something special, so I chose Durango, and a ride on the Durango Silverton railroad which is just fantastic. I was a little concerned about the EPA...
The Animas River is great for rafting the rapids, or just for some fly fishing. It is cold but very clear and it flows through the San Juan National Forest cutting a deep gorge into the mountain. Beautiful scenery.
The water color is back to normal although fishing and water sports have not been resumed until further evaluation. Good current flowing through town. Wishing for quick recovery! Such a beautiful river.
With four days in Durango, we were fortunate to spend two of them in the presence of this pristine national treasure. The other two days, were alongside the fouled river, now a butterscotch color. What a disgrace and tragedy for our nation! Let's hope that it bounces back from this catastrophic assault and returns to its crystal clear, rushing nature.
